Here are some simple, no cost things you can do right now to maintain steady blood sugar levels throughout your day.

Your first meal of the day should contain protein instead of sugary cereal or pasties. This will get you off to a good start. Protein and fat burn more slowly that sugar or carbohydrates. Starting with protein will help you maintain constant energy and avoid cravings or snacking.

Start each meal with high fiber foods like vegetables or salad. The good flora that live in your gut need to eat fiber. They use it to produce the nutrients and neurochemicals you need for good cognitive function and mood control.

When you eat carbohydrates or sweet foods, always eat them along with protein or fats because this will slow down the absorption of glucose into your blood stream.

Avoid eating sweet items on an empty stomach. Eating sweets on an empty stomach causes a large glucose spike. Eat sweets after a meal that includes fiber, fat, and protein.

Always choose to eat foods in their natural state when possible. Processed foods contribute to fast sugar absorption. Eat a whole apple, not applesauce or apple juice. Eat real vegetables, not fried vegetable chips. Choose whole grain bread instead of donuts or bagels. Eat oatmeal instead of cheerios.

Move after you eat. Take a walk, do some light activity, or just move around instead of plopping down on the sofa. Using your muscles to move around will help you to use glucose more efficiently.

Try to get 8 hours of deep, undisturbed sleep each night. Sleep helps your body regulate glucose.

Drink plenty of water. Water supports good metabolic function. Water should always be your drink of first choice.

Remember that sudden glucose spikes, surges of sugar in your bloodstream, damage your body and contribute to the development of chronic diseases, fat storage, weight gain, and mood swings. What you want to do is smooth out the peaks and valleys so that your body has a smooth, steady supply of energy to keep you going all day long.
